I got my 2GB CF card yesterday, and today I’m going out to hunt for a lightweight traveling tripod. I definitely want to bring one with me, but mine is way too heavy and also semi-broken. I’ve decided on what lenses to bring. This will probably become my standard travel photography kit: 70-200mm, 50mm, 12-24mm, 105mm Macro. That’s more than I need, but I’ll feel comfortable having them all available.
I read an inspirational story in GQ yesterday about a couple who was walking across Provence in France on the GR foot trails that connect all the little villages. The photos were amazing. I’d love to do that some day. I need to find a backpack that can carry clothes and camera gear too. Right now my camera bag only holds camera stuff, so it’s not too convenient for backpacking. Maybe I’ll look for something like that today too. It would be great to be able to leave my suitcase at home for this trip to France.
Hmmmm why not a small suitcase for clothes and hygiene material, then a backpack for photo and misc stuff? You can leave the suitcase at hotel/hostel whatever, but if you use only one, then you gotta bring the whole thing with you at all times and……dont know about you…..but thats annoying as hell.
The small suitcase is what I already have, foo! Suitcases are not well suited for traveling on rural footpaths. I would have the bigger backpack for traveling between towns, and a daypack for just walking around.
Blah be a man and carry it over your head, foo! It also serves as shade from the sun.

have you considered buying a large, proper camping style backpack?
