I was cleaning up my Internet Explorer bookmarks today. Many have been there for years and years, and I don’t remember putting them in there. For instance, I found a link to a translation of the writings of Confucius. I’ve always put up with stupid jokes that begin with, “Confucius say…” and then have some lame joke about getting kicked in the groin as a punchline. But, the real writings of Confucius are very simple, and very wise guides to living a moral and peaceful existence. Considering he lived from 551-479 BC, it’s pretty amazing that they still hold up true today. For instance:
“Do not be concerned about others not appreciating you. Be concerned about your not appreciating others.”
and
“Exploring the old and deducing the new makes a teacher.”
On this page, he describes the perfect world, or “commonwealth state,” which is something modern governments are still trying to achieve. I’m always impressed by the universal truths that can transcend time and culture.
