Today is the day in Canada that we celebrate Remembrance Day, which is our way of commemorating our fallen war heroes. These are the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our way of life against those who strive to take it from us. At 11:11AM every November 11, we observe a minute of silence to contemplate their gift to us. We wear red poppies to remind us of the fields in France where so many of our heroes died.
Thanks in part to those who gave their lives in defense of Canada, we have been able to come a long way in recognizing the equality, the rights and the freedoms of our varied population. Although I sometimes have criticisms about our society, our government, our culture, I am still glad every day to live in Canada. This nation may not be perfect, but it is my home and native land.
Ah yes, I observed that moment in time today. Although it IS very hard for me to contemplate what those brave men and women went through for ‘peace’ in our part of the world, and indeed all over, it still humbles me a little to think that without their actions we would be living ina different society today. I’m proud to be Canadian. At times I take it for granted, but days like today DO help to ‘ground’ my thoughts … to really appreciate where I live, and WHY I live today.
i took my two minute sof silence at 11…while the other 2 people in my workroom yammered away o.O ah well..
Been watching war movies lately in my film class, and I just could not imagine living like that 🙁 so sad 🙁
